Regardless of your views on Elon Musk, there is a new spacecraft carrying human beings into the black for the first time in it’s history...
...that is just damn cool. The livestream is here if you are interested:
Broadcast just started...la
unch is scheduled for 4:33pm EDT.
Livestream for Mission Control Audio is here:
Let’s hope it goes well! :)

I feel like the spacesuits have gotten a much needed update.

Musk definitely wanted them to look stylish, though they appear more bulky than the prototypes (might also be the wearers, one of these astronauts looks to have a bit of a dad-bod) .
I love the clean white cladding on the spacecraft and suits though.

This is really exciting stuff, first American to be launched int o space on an American made spacecraft in nearly a decade. STS-135 launched July 21st, 2011.
Godspeed crew!

Godspeed, colonels.

There is hope for the rest of us!

I really hope the weather holds and they fly today. They have all these live streams and events around it that a delay would be a real bummer, though I could do without the performative patriotism of singing the national anthem.
For some reason SpaceX Elon is a lot more bearable than Tesla Elon. Probably because it’s a B2B company not a retail one.

If this works OK, we basically won't need Russia for anything anymore, since we already have plenty of alternate oil and gas sources.

I’m fine with them being mo
re bulky...they need to be for the hardware that is in them, I imagine. Also, these are just flight suits...imagine if actual ‘in-space’ space suits were this sleek!
![]() 05/27/2020 at 12:52 |

For sure! Space is cool! :P

Weren’t the astronauts sort of grumbling about the “touchscreen interface”?
Hope it goes well!

Nah, it’s because an adult runs the company....
Although I”m sure some nights Gwynne goes home and screams into a pillow.

Elon is a bit much...but at the same time, I can’t help but respect him. I’m not a fanboi, but he and his companies have accomplished some genuinely impressive stuff.
Tesla has come a long way for a car company in a short time, compartivitely
, and SpaceX’s technology is phenomenal....I mean. The turnaround on re-flying rockets and capsules for SpaceX is almost unbelieveable compared to the old Sh
uttle tech, as awesome as the Shuttle was.

sold!
![]() 05/27/2020 at 13:10 |

I wouldn’t be surprised if they were....I would be too! I much prefer physical buttons and switches...
But we wouldn’t be going with a launch if they didn’t find some sort of middle ground, so I guess there’s that! :)

God speed Bob and Doug!

LOL
![]() 05/27/2020 at 13:37 |

Since this is the SpaceX feed, they
mentioned “Tesla” every chance they get. I wish I’d kept count - ha!

I had touch pad mouse interface in the Embraer 170 plane. It was great, until you needed to “click” something in rough turbulence. Then it sucked. A thumb ring or somewhere to plant your hand for stability would have been nice. But on launch, or, say, a stuck thruster spinning the craft like Gemini had, would be bad for a touch screen.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 13:50 |

Yeah...I’ve been glossing over that for the sake of the historic moment, lol!

Interesting uniforms for the flight crew.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 13:59 |

40% chance of good weather... Fingers crossed they’ll get to fly!

Does NASA have their own feed, or is it all running through SpaceX?
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:11 |
|
I hope so...will be disappointed if not, but their safety is the most important, of course!
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:12 |

They have a stream, but it seems to be the same feed.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:12 |

Are these
kids in the NASA jackets actually
NASA employees?
I’m kinda doubting it...
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:12 |

Why do all the presenters seem like they’re straight out of a Chevy commercial?
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:20 |

Ughh I can’t stand Elon and his world, can we see the Boeing people and capsule please?
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:21 |

I switched to the NASA channel, I am not an Elon fan.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:22 |

Of course - hopefully the person making the decision feels no outside pressure to make it happen if conditions aren’t ideal.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:28 |

I’m really not either, but I’ll admit it’s fun to hear him talking about inspiring kids to be astronauts/scientists/engineers.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:30 |

Yeah I’m all for getting the ball rolling again. Everything he makes looks like Apple, boring smooth white pl astic look . I’ll take the Boeing suit!
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:31 |
|
Nice! Hadn’t seen that.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:32 |

Yeah remember there are two capsules! I am on team blue suit.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:33 |

I get annoyed trying to hit a button on the touchscreen in my car, I can’t imagine how hard it is to hit a button on a touch screen while strapped to a rocket. Then again, it probably wasn’t easy to hit a physical switch in the Apollo Capsules or the Space Shuttle.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:34 |

The technicians with black suits, hood and masks (I’m guessing virus masks) look like ninja techs. Hell yeah ninja techs!

Wait a second,
Are these screens just running Windows? That certainly looks like a Windows task bar on the bottom of those screens.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:38 |

Elon has been calling himself SpaceX’s chief engineer (as did his PR guy interviewing him & Bridenstine) - that’s complete BS, right?
I guess if you’re the founder, you can call yourself whatever you want, but... come on, man.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:44 |

Very cool.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 14:54 |

Oh no they have nothing to do with actually designing anything. L eave it to Drumpf to ruin the mood, I was having a nice time not thinking about the orange turd and then he flies by and the comments get MAGA bullshit going.

YouTube comments: not even once.

Most of the switch-oriented cockpits use human factors— the throttles on a 747, say, have a unique feel that is distinct from, say, the landing gear lever nearby.
Mostly I believe the human factors research over 50 years runs pretty counter to the “put everything on a touchscreen” movement— which is a Musk fetish.
Add some turbulence, some vertigo and yawing motion? Ugh.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 15:24 |

With physical controls you can also anchor your hand against something to keep your fingers fixed relative to the control. You can’t do that with a touch screen and have to hit the button accurately without touching the controls next to it. Heck, with a physical control you can even grab the control and then double check that it is the control you want before activating it.

I’m not a huge fanboi, but the Dragon tech is impressive. As much as I love Boeing, I don’t think their launch system is going to be as capable...
![]() 05/27/2020 at 16:42 |
|
Haha, they do! Even the silver fasteners on their suits add to that vibe :P
![]() 05/27/2020 at 16:43 |

Naw, it’s their own design AFAIK - high res photo link of the touchscreens in Dragon:

Yup, it’s a shame...was looking forward to it. Now I have to look forward to Saturday! :)

Yeah, this is what I’m saying. Wearing a NASA jacket in real life, because you like it? Cool, cool...
Wearing a NASA jacket on a nationally publicized livestream of the shuttle launch, although you’re
not a NASA employee? Not cool.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 17:15 |
|
I forgot all about it until I saw your post. Yeah it will be cool to see people not launching from Baikonur.
![]() 05/27/2020 at 18:56 |
|
Well, SpaceX is working in
collaboration with NASA so I think they wearing NASA logos on their jackets would be OK?
![]() 05/27/2020 at 18:57 |

:)
I’ve always loved space stuff...will be watching the re-try of the launch on Saturday!
![]() 05/27/2020 at 20:24 |

The expectation of someone wearing a NASA logo during something like this is that they actually know what they’re talking about. I got the impression that a couple of these kids were just SpaceX social media folks...
![]() 05/27/2020 at 21:38 |

Yeah, they were mostly SpaceX PR staff I think.
